Clifford Junior “Tubs” Newton, 74, passed away on September 14, 2020, in Kansas City, KS.

Tubs was born on November 19, 1945, in Sycamore, MO to Clifford and Edna (Carter) Newton. In 1961, he and his family moved to the Kansas City area, where he remained for the rest of his life. He attended Van Horn High School but was drafted into the United States Army and served as a paratrooper during the Vietnam War. During his service, he obtained his GED, and he was honorably discharged in 1968. He returned home, met Deborah Short, and they married on July 4, 1969.

Tubs was a skilled laborer with Ace Pipe Cleaning. At the time of his passing, he had 52 years of service with the company. In addition, he was a union steward of Local 663. He had an incredibly strong work ethic – he never missed a day.

Tubs worked hard, but he played hard, too. He loved fishing for bluegill, catfish, or crappie. He was well-known in the neighborhood for having an extensive garden, including potatoes, jalapenos, and several dozen tomato plants. He will be remembered for his famous weekend patio fish frys and family picnics at the park, where he would play basketball and horseshoes with the kids.

Tubs was quick-witted, sarcastic at times, and had a great sense of humor. He gave great advice because he was honest. He never hesitated to say what was on his mind. He was a passionate fan of the Kansas City Chiefs and was so proud to see them win the Super Bowl. God broke the mold when he made Tubs, and he will be missed by his family and many friends.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years Deborah Newton; children Dawayne Struttman (wife Melissa), Clifford David Newton, Tonia Toia (husband Tui), Stacey Newton, and Taylor Burnett; grandchildren Spenser, Brandon, Tamara, LeGrand, Samoa, Genieve, Ashley, Koltyn, Justin, William, Nicole, Hannah, Daelyn, and Avery; great-grandchildren Koah, Makai, Legend, Kaydan, Carter, Juliana, Malea, and Veada; sister Maggie Mendal; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents and six brothers.

A visitation will be held on Sunday, September 20, from 6-8pm, at Carson-Speaks Chapel, 1501 W. Lexington Ave., Independence, MO 64052. A funeral service will be held on Monday, September 21, at 10am, at the chapel. He will be laid to rest in Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in a private committal service.
