Obituary

Wanda F. Brickner passed away on Dec. 30, 2019, at the age of 87. A private burial service will take place at Oak Ridge Memory Gardens.

Wanda was born on Jan. 22, 1932, in Dunlap, Iowa, to Thomas James Palmer and Dorothy Juanita Coburn Palmer. She married U.S. Navy veteran Dale Henry Brickner in 1952, and to this union were born three daughters. Throughout her youth and adult life, she resided in several states, including Iowa, Nebraska, Texas, California, Kansas – but her family found home in Independence, Missouri in 1975.

Wanda devoted much of her life to children. She was a stay-at-home mother for most of her life, but she worked briefly in a bakery, for Walmart, for a dental office, and most notably as a scrub technician for an obstetrics office in Hutchinson, Kansas. She was very proud of the fact that she helped deliver many, many babies into the world. She was an adoring surrogate grandma to children in her church, and she happily crocheted and embroidered articles for the young ones in her life. Her family has fond memories of piling in to the camping trailer for trips to the Black Hills and Watkins Mill. She also enjoyed romance novels and rooting for the Chiefs, the Royals, the Comets, and the Packers. She could talk to anyone about anything, and she stayed young at heart by keeping a great sense of humor.

Wanda was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Dale and her parents, Thomas and Dorothy.

Wanda is survived by her daughters: Wendy Sage, Julie Walkup and husband John, and Debbie Schieszer and husband Mark; grandchildren, Shannon and husband Josh, Philip and wife Kellie, Courtney Jacobson and husband Gordon, Cork and wife Vanessa, and Ian; fourteen great grandchildren; twin sister, Juanita Miller; brother, Jim Palmer and wife Beth; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family.
