Robert W. Adams, 85, Independence, MO passed away March 14, 2010. Services will be at 10 am, Sat., March 20, 2010 at Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th Street, Independence, MO 64055; cremation. A committal service with Full Military Honors will immediately follow the service at Oak Ridge Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the P.O.W. Organization, Heart of America Chapter, 109 Holder Rd., Independence, MO 64050 Attn: Ed Slater.
Bob was born to James Raymond and Etta L. (Hesher) Adams on May 2, 1924 and grew up in Independence, MO. Following his graduation from William Chrisman High School he worked for North American Aviation building B-25 bombers and entered the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1943. He served in the European Theater of WW II as the ball turret gunner on a B-17 before being shot down over enemy territory. He was a prisoner of war for a year before being liberated on his twenty-first birthday. He returned to the States after the war and took over the operation of his father’s company – J.R. Adams and Son Moving & Storage. He worked there forty-five years and owned the company until his retirement in the mid 1990’s. He was a member of the Heart of America P.O.W. Chapter, a long-time member and Past President of the Sertoma Club of Independence, member of the VFW and a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Independence.
Bob was preceded in death by wife Jadean Adams in 1999; wife Nancy Adams in 2006; brother Harry Adams and sister Rozella Adams. He is survived by sons Michael Adams and wife Sherry, Bluffton, SC; Glenn Adams and wife Andrea, Lee’s Summit, MO; daughter Georgia Cartwright, Olathe, KS; sister June Carver, Independence, MO; grandchildren Nick Adams, Samantha Adams, Tammi Jones and husband Bill, Tim Faris and wife Laurel; great-grandchildren Casey & Trent Jones; Alison & Austin Faris.
