Albert “Virgil” Rudd, known to family and friends as Virgil or Al, passed away peacefully on February 26, 2026.
Albert was born on April 23, 1931, in Independence, MO, to Albert V. Rudd Sr. and Silva Jane Bressie Rudd. He attended and graduated from William Chrisman High School with the Class of 1949. After graduation he enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he served as Airman First Class for 4 years.
He married Grace Eloise Bryant on April 27, 1956 in Independence, MO. They were blessed with two children, a daughter, Denise and son, David. Together they built a life centered on love, faith, and family.
Virgil worked at Montgomery Ward prior to serving his community as a police officer, dedicating his career to protecting and guiding others. He was especially passionate about building trust between law enforcement and young people. He founded the “Officer Friendly” program, regularly visiting preschool and elementary school classrooms to teach children about safety, kindness, and the important role of police officers in the community. With his warm smile and steady presence, he made a lasting impression on countless children, helping them feel safe and valued. His commitment to serving others extended far beyond his badge, and his influence will be remembered for generations.
He was a devoted member of the Church of Christ Temple Lot, where he served many years as treasurer, Bible School craft teacher, and woodcarving instructor at teen camp. His love of woodcarving extended beyond teaching, he founded a woodcarving group at the Sermon Center, sharing his passion and skills with fellow enthusiasts. Virgil also enjoyed time at The Palmer Center, where he served on the Advisory Board until his passing and loved socializing, sharing stories, and enjoying meals with friends. He and Grace shared a love for traveling, taking bus trips, cruises, and trips abroad, and especially treasured visits to Branson, including Compton Ridge Campground and Silver Dollar City, creating lasting memories with those they loved most.
Virgil was a kind-hearted and generous man whose smile could light up any room. He truly never met a stranger, greeting everyone with warmth and genuine interest. Whether he was serving his community, visiting children through the Officer Friendly program, or spending time with family and friends, he had a remarkable way of making people feel welcome and valued. He had a steady presence and a generous heart, and he will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Albert is survived by: his children, Denise Evans (Greg), David Rudd (Becky); grandchildren, Brad Evans (Brandi), Courtney Hefner (David), Ashley Young (Casey), and Lindsey McIndoo (Tony); great-grandchildren, Blakely, Macy, Brady, Willow, Kalvin, Sunny, Alex (Shauna), Shelby (Clayton), Trystan, Kaylli; One great-great-grandchild, Caiven and many extended family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Grace and his parents, Albert and Silva.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 3, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and funeral services will be held on Wednesday, March 4, at 10:00 a.m. at Speaks Suburban Chapel, with burial to follow at Woodlawn Cemetery.
