Anne Bentz Callihan

November 8, 1946 — August 4, 2025

Anne Bentz Callihan of Independence, Mo., born on November 8, 1946, in Coffeyville, Kansas, was a beloved educator and community member whose spirit touched the lives of many. She passed away on August 4, 2025, in Olathe, Kansas, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, dedication, and unwavering service to others.

Graduating from Field Kindley High School in Coffeyville, Anne continued her education at Minnesota State University in Mankato, where she earned her master’s degree in communications. For over 46 years, she shared her knowledge and passion for English, speech, and debate at Schlagle High School and Van Horn High School, shaping the minds of countless students. Anne was not just a teacher; she was a mentor, a friend and always willing to go the extra mile to inspire others and encourage them to pursue their own dreams.

A simple woman at heart, Anne radiated love and warmth to everyone fortunate enough to cross her path. Her kindness was evident in the many hours she dedicated to volunteering at local charities and her relentless pursuit to ensure that those in need were cared for. She embodied the true spirit of giving, often extending her help beyond what was expected, driven by her deep compassion for others.

Anne found joy in trail walking, traveling, and trying new foods. She cherished her time visiting Branson and enjoyed the performances at Starlight Amphitheater. At home, her serene backyard garden, surrounded with solar lights that she lovingly collected, served as a tranquil refuge, as she enjoyed living in the moment and the beauty of nature.

Her passing leaves a void in the hearts of all who knew her. She will be remembered not just for her role as an educator but as a shining example of how one person can make a difference in so many lives through kindness and love.

Anne is survived by her daughter, Amy Bentz (James); step-daughter, Kathrina Nellis (Tracey); dear friend, Dan Minter and grandchildren, Aurora, Olivia, Isaac and Ezren.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Robert Nellis and parents, Arthur and Annella (Blanton) Flesher.

In celebration of her life, visitation services will be held at Speaks Suburban Chapel in Independence, MO, on August 9, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 PM.
