Richard "Dick" Arand

September 2, 1924 — April 3, 2013

Richard “Dick” H. Arand, 88, passed away on April 3, 2013 at Kansas City Hospice House. Visitation will be Monday, April 8, 2013 at 10:00 am followed by the funeral mass at 11:00 am at St. Mark’s Catholic Church, 3736 South Lee’s Summit Road, Independence, MO 64055. There will be a meal immediately afterwards at the church for family and friends. Burial in Catholic Cemetery (Resurrection Cemetery) 8321 Quivira Rd., Lenexa, KS will follow.

Dick was born on September 2, 1924, in Washington, MO, to Mary and Edward Arand. He and his family lived in Union and Jefferson City, MO. Upon his graduation from high school in 1941, he enlisted in the US Navy and served as a radio man for 4 years during World War II.

After the war, Dick went to work at the Board of Health in Jefferson City, where he met Connie Trevier and they were married on May 31, 1947. Shortly thereafter they moved to St. Louis so he could attend St. Louis University majoring in Business. After his graduation he went to work for Montgomery Ward in Jefferson City. He was transferred with Montgomery Ward to Chanute and Lawrence, KS over the next few years. In 1954, he took the position as manager of the Homestead Country Club in Prairie Village, KS. The family moved to Overland Park, KS, where they raised their four children. There they were active members of Queen of the Holy Rosary Church. Eventually, he began working at Farmland Industries where he worked for 28 years before his retirement in 1987.

Dick was a life-long baseball fan and golf enthusiast. He passed his love for sports to his children and coached many of their baseball and softball teams. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
Dick was preceded in death by Connie, his wife of 65 years, his parents, his brother, and his newborn daughter, Mary Therese. He is survived by his son Rick Arand (Judy) of Lee’s Summit, son Mike Arand (Vicky) of Tulsa, OK, son Dale Arand (Liberty) of Denver, CO, daughter, Donna Arand-Hopkins (John) of Savannah, GA, 9 grandchildren, Brad, Matt, Deneale, Nathan, Rachel, David, Jacob, Isaiah, Lahya, and 7 great-grandchildren, Mallory, Lucas, Austin, Emery, Mason, Andrew and Preston.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to Kansas City Hospice House, 12000 Wornall Rd., Kansas City, MO 64145 or St. Mark’s Catholic Church.
