Darrell Eldon Ashby, Jr., 60 of Independence, MO passed away Sunday, December 25, 2011 at the Kansas City VA Hospital. Services will be 11:00 a.m., Thursday, December 29, 2011 at the Carson-Speaks Chapel 1501 W. Lexington Avenue, Independence, MO 64052. Burial with full military honors will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 9:00 a.m., until service time Thursday at the chapel. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Kidney Foundation or the Kansas City VA Hospital. Darrell was born April 4, 1951 in Muscatine, IA to Darrell E. and Nomi (Goddard) Ashby, Sr. He grew up in Independence and attended William Chrisman High School where he belonged to the ROTC. He enlisted in the Army in 1968 and proudly served until 1971. While in the Army he served in the 72nd Airborne at Ft. Bragg and the 345th Engineers. After the service he worked as an assembler for the GM Leeds plant, he was a bounty hunter and owned and operated a lawn and snow removal service until he became disabled. He enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family especially his grandchildren. He was a member of the Community of Christ and had attended the College Park and East Alton congregations. He was married to Tina Ethridge on December 31, 2005; she survives of the home. Other survivors include; a daughter, Heather Schaefer and husband Andrew of Grain Valley, MO; a son, Nicholas Ashby and his wife Theresa of Independence, MO; his mother Nomi Henry and step father Bill Kluska both of Independence, MO; siblings, Darma Moss and husband Tom, Tim Kluska and Cindy Pettit all of Independence, MO; 6 grandchildren, Denise Aumua-Ashby, Kylee Ashby, Amaya Ashby, Aydin Schaefer, Sophia Ashby and Selena Ayala; 2 step children, Justin Wolfe and Stephanie Woodward and husband Jeremy and a step grandchild, Madyson Wolfe.
