Roberta Jean (Stapleton) Bailey of Independence, MO passed away Oct. 6, 2007 surrounded by her family. She was born June 23, 1926 in Gallatin, MO to Lorena and Robert E. Stapleton. She was one of seven children, all of whom preceded her in death. Roberta showed how important family was to her by keeping in constant contact with relatives, remaining involved in their lives, and keeping them in contact with each other. For fifty years she cherished her membership at St. Paul United Methodist Church and enjoyed serving in numerous ways. She worked for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for 23 years before retiring in 1986.
Roberta was preceded in death by her first husband, Robert C. Smith, Sr. in 1969. She is survived by her devoted husband and caregiver, Loren R. Bailey; son Robert C. Smith, Jr. and his wife Paula, of Cleveland, MO; daughter Carol S. Markle-Hull and her husband Michael D. Hull of Evansville, Indiana; stepson Dale G. Williams of Independence, MO; grandsons Robert C. Smith III, B. Alex Smith, Adam S. Markle, M. Kyle Markle, Robert H. Williams, John M. Hull, Wilson M. Hull; granddaughters Sheri Williams and Lauren K. Hull; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews, including Nancy Milam of Overland Park, KS.
Services will be 10 am, Thursday, Oct. 11, 2007 at Speaks Suburban Chapel followed by a graveside service at 2:30 pm at Grand River Cemetery in Jameson, MO. Visitation will be 6-8 pm, Wed. at the funeral home. The family requests contributions to St. Paul United Methodist Church, 3601 S.
