Chester Baldwin, 85, of Independence, MO, passed away Saturday, August 15, 2009 after a short battle with cancer. Chester was born on August 24, 1923 to Leonard and Grace Baldwin in Preston, MO. He grew up in Marshall, MO, and after graduation moved to Kansas City where he attended Huff Business College. A veteran of WWII, upon returning from the war, Chester went to work for the Kansas City Southern Railroad where he spent the next 33 years, and where he met his wife of 54 years, Dorothy. Chester enjoyed woodworking, listening to country music, traveling, and collecting railroad memorabilia. Chester was active in the National Association of Retired and Veteran Railway Employees (NARVRE), where he was Treasurer up until a few months ago. Besides his parents, his wife Dorothy, and his sister, Mildred Bellefeuille, also preceded him. He is survived by one son, Rick, and wife Joy of Liberty, MO; sister-in-law, Norma Lee Whiting of Lee’s Summit, MO; brother-in-law, Sam Morrone Jr. and wife Marjorie of Salina, KS; brother-in-law, Henry Killion of Overland Park, KS; three grandchildren, Katie, Amber and Brett; one great grandchild, Addisen; many nieces; nephews; friends; his beloved grand-dog, Lily; and grand-cats, Sneakers and Ginger. A visitation will be held from 6-8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 19, at the Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th St., Independence, MO. Services at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday at the chapel, with burial to follow at Lee’s Summit Cemetery. Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
