Doras V. Becker was born to Eugene Ardivan and Asenith Emiline Gamet on November 13,
1919 in Pisgah, Iowa She graduted from Pisgah High School in 1935 with a class of 9. She
attended Graceland College and Iowa State Teachers College where she graduated with a certificate
in Music and English. She met her future husband, Willard C. Becker, while attendingGraceland
and they were married August 19, 1945, after Willard returned from serving in the Army Air Corps
in England. While Willard was in service to his country, Doras taught school and led a Girls Glee
Club that performed live on radio in Des Moines, Iowa. She also performed on the radio both
singing and playing the organ in the 1940's and 50's.
With Willard's work under church appointment, they eventually settled in Warrensburg, Missouri
where she was President of the Council of Church Women, Chairman of the March of Dimes drive,
and Women's Leader for the Warrensburg congregation. In 1954 the couple was blessed with
arrival of their only child, Sharon Kay. In 1963 the family moved to Independence, MO, where
Willard was assigned to the newly developed stake Blue Valley. While in Independence, Doras
became involved in music, playing the organ for many church activities. She was President of the
Independence Music Club for 6 years. She was also involved in Girl's work as a Skylark and
Oriole leader and a badge councelor. Their home congregation was Village Heights RLDS
where Doras accompanied the church choir for several years.
When retirement came along, Doras enjoyed spending time with her family, Sharon, Sharon's
husband, Richard Bruns, and her grandchildren Lindsay and Eric Bruns. To her greatest pleasure,
both of Doras's grandchildren became involved in music; Lindsay in band and orchestra, and Eric
in choir and vocal solo work. She and Willard spent a lot of time traveling to visit relatives all over
the USA, and doing volunteer church work.
Doras died at The Groves on March 18th, 2010. She is survived by her daughter, Sharon Bruns,
her son-in-law Richard Bruns, and two grandchildren, Lindsay (and Jason) Bauer and Eric Bruns.
Memorial services will be 10:00 AM Tuesday, March 23, 2010 at Carson-Speaks Chapel; 1501 W. Lexington Ave. Independence, MO. Inurnment will be at Mound Grove Cemetery.
Any monetary donations may be made to the Music Arts Institute of Independence to the scholarship fund. She is inturred at Mound Grove cemetery along side her husband.
