Betty Jo Miller

Betty Jo Jones Miller, born on August 18, 1931, in Lawrence County, Missouri, to Ira E. and Vera M. (Paris) Jones peacefully departed this life on May 3, 2025.

Betty's early education began in a one room rural school and she graduated in 1949 from Mt. Vernon High School. Following that she attended Kansas City Bible College earning her certification. It was while serving on KCBC’s gospel team she met the love of her life, Forrest L. Miller. They were married on April 27, 1956 and had two daughters, Lucy A. and Marilyn K. “Mari”.

Betty lived a life characterized by dedication and service to the church, both in her career with Heartland Presbytery, Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and the individual congregations she and Forrest attended faithfully.

A cherished mother and grandmother, Betty is survived by her daughter, Mari Shineman (R. Richard “Rick”); beloved grandchildren, Kevin D. Berry, Richard A. Shineman (Kathleen Otterman), Steven C. Shineman (Kristina), Troy A. Berry, and Megan E. Berry; great-grandchildren, Aubrey Jo Shineman, Austin Sinclair, and Titus Shineman; son-in-law David K. Berry; nephew Dale A. Jones (Saundra), niece Kelly R. Jack (Eric), their families and many cousins. Betty was accompanied in death by her sister, Bonnie L. Jones and preceded in death by her parents Ira and Vera, husband Forrest, and daughter, Lucy.

Betty's legacy is one of compassion, love, and unwavering dedication to her family, friends and the church. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

In lieu of flowers, Betty has requested donations be made to City Union Mission, 1100 E 11th St, Kansas City, MO 64106 where she and Forrest met.

Visitation will be on Friday, May 23, 2025, from 1:00 to 2:00 PM, followed by a memorial service at 2:00 PM at Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 East 39th St S, Independence, MO 64055.
