Billy Joe
Cowen
December 14, 1929 – April 12, 2026
Billy Joe Cowen, affectionately known to all as Bill, passed away peacefully on April 12, 2026, in Belton, Missouri. Born on December 14, 1929, in Elkland, Missouri, Bill lived a life marked by warmth, humor, and an unwavering devotion to family and community.
A proud graduate of Elkland High School, Bill answered the call of duty and served honorably in the United States Army. Following his military service, he dedicated much of his working life to KPL Gas Service and after retirement he worked for many years at Gordmans. His commitment and hard work left a lasting impression on colleagues and customers alike
Bill was a man who brought joy wherever he went. Known for his quick wit and infectious laughter, he charmed those around him with his fondness for bad dad jokes, his love of engaging conversation, and his deep appreciation for both country western tunes and traditional Christian hymns. His social nature and genuine interest in others made him a cherished friend to many.
His greatest passion, however, was his family. Bill was a devoted father to his children, Sabrina (Jason) Bangert, Lyle (Dianne) Cowen, and Matthew Cowen, and a beloved grandfather to five grandchildren and two great grandchildren, all of whom were a constant source of pride and happiness. He also shared a special bond with his sister, Gladeys Hartwell, and was surrounded by extended family and dear friends who will hold his memory close in their hearts.
Bill was preceded in death by his loving wife, Freda Cowen, his parents, Elbert and Audrey Cowen, and his siblings Loretta Hartwell and Elbert Cowen. Though these cherished family members departed before him, Bill’s legacy lives on vibrantly through those who loved him deeply.
A visitation to celebrate Bill’s life will be held on April 18, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Carson-Speaks Chapel in Independence, Missouri. This will be followed immediately by a funeral service at 2:00 p.m. interment will take place at Mt. Washington Cemetery, following his services.
As we gather to remember Bill, we reflect on a man whose humor and kindness brightened our days, whose loyalty and love enriched our lives, and whose spirit will forever remain a guiding light. His stories, his laughter, and his songs will echo in our hearts, reminding us that though he has passed from this world, the love he gave will never fade.
