Dorothy Jean Bissell

September 25, 1929 — April 24, 2023

Dorothy Jean Bissell, 93, of Independence, MO, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 24th, 2023. A visitation will be held from 7-9pm on Monday, May 1st with a funeral service at 2pm on Tuesday, May 2nd, both at Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E 39th St.; Independence, MO 64055. Interment will follow at Oak Ridge Memory Gardens in Independence.

Dorothy was born on September 25, 1929, in Independence, MO to David and Hattie (Hendrickson) Wynn. While attending William Chrisman High School, Dorothy won a Lucille Ball look-a-like contest. After graduation, she worked as a switchboard operator for Southwestern Bell until she married her high school sweetheart Melvin Green in 1950. They spent 22 wonderful years together until his passing in 1972. It was at that time that Dorothy took a job at Montgomery Ward and worked in a variety of positions until her retirement as a Department Manager in 1991.

Montgomery Ward also introduced her to a co-worker that would soon become her soulmate. In 1974, Dorothy married Bernard “Bernie” Marcotte. Together, they enjoyed time at the Lake of the Ozarks, square dancing, traveling in their Camper Club, festivals and craft fairs and attending First United Methodist Church in Warsaw. They were married 34 years before Bernie passed away in 2007.

In 2009, she married her friend, Bill Bissell. She and Bill were married 10 years until his passing in 2019.

Most recently, Dorothy was attending The Gathering Baptist Church on Noland Rd. Dorothy was a lover of people. She was active in PTA, a Cub Scout leader, a member of the Young Matrons in Warsaw, and served on 9 different mission trips through her church. She was a church organist, sang in the choir and loved music of all kinds. When she moved to Blue Springs with Deanna in 2013, she loved to watch her great-grandkids’ dance recitals, church plays and all of the sports events.

She was a season ticket holder for 9 years with the KC Mavericks. She loved to watch the games, especially the fights. She “seat danced” to all the music and won a karaoke sing off during an intermission. Dorothy will be missed by so many that knew and loved her.

Dorothy is survived by her children, Dale Green (Heather Evans), Dennis (Martha) Green, and Deanna Lopez. stepdaughter Cheryl (Steve) Woodruff, grandchildren, Meagan Bloess, Seth Green, Amy (David) Jacoby, Adam Hichcock, Bernard “Bernie” (Austin) Lopez; Brendan Woodruff; Meghan Woodruff; 11 great-grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews and “bonus” grandkids.
