Jack Burger

Jackie (Jack) Dean Burger, 87, Independence, MO passed away February 2, 2023. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 am, Friday, February 10 at St. Mark’s Catholic Church, 3736 S. Lee's Summit Rd, Independence, MO 64055; entombment at Mt. Olivet Mausoleum. Mass will be preceded by visitation beginning at 9:00 am at the church. Jack was born September 3, 1935 in Kansas City, KS (while his mother was visiting relatives). He grew up near California, MO and attended California High School. After high school Jack worked hard for several local farmers before hammering spikes while building a railroad.

Jack married Virginia Ann Hurst on April 7, 1956 in St. Martins MO. They moved to Boonville, MO where Jack worked as the Rural Route Milk Man collecting full 10-gallon milk cans from dairy farmers. They moved to Independence, MO in 1957 where Jack built basements for many homes before he began a long career at the General Motors Leeds Plant in October 1957. He was a member of UAW Local 93 until officially retiring in 1989 after working for 32 years. Jack and Virginia spent retirement years with their children, grandchildren, traveling and Jack especially loved fishing. Jack and his wife Virginia were founding members of St. Mark’s Parish since 1965.

Jack was preceded in death by his wife Virginia (Hurst) Burger, parents Fred and Lucy (Murphy) Burger, brothers John, Roger, Richard and Bill Burger, sisters Evelyn Harvey and Patty Harvey. He is survived by son Jim Burger and wife Paula, Lee’s Summit, MO; daughter Linda Smothers and husband Greg, Trimble, MO; daughter Teresa Burger of Kansas City, MO; grandchildren Brian, David, Sarah, Steve, Kimberlea, Allison and Jack; and great-grandchildren Jackson, Macradee, Macklyn, Blake, Patrick, Abigail, Bennett, Gentry and Lily; brothers Arthur and David Burger; sisters Betty Stevens, Sue Tuttle and Kathy Roll.
