James H. Burks, 83, of Independence, died March 11, 2007 at his home. Visitation will be held on Wednesday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Carson-Speaks Chapel. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday at Carson-Speaks Chapel at 2:00p.m. Interment will follow in Mt. Washington Forever Cemetery. James was born in Crocker, Missouri on April 23, 1923 the son of ____________ and Rosa (Barton) Burks. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army. James was retired from Armco Steel formerly known as Union Wire and Rope in 1986. He will be remembered as a family man who enjoyed sitting on the porch, enjoying his cat Prissy, gardening, playing pitch and going to the boats. He was an avid football and baseball fan and enjoyed watching the Chiefs and Royals play. James was preceded in death by his wife Irene Burks in November of 1991. On April 17, 1992 he married Shirley (Routh) Shepherd who survives him. He is also survived by a daughter, Betty Owen of Independence, two sons Craig E. Shepherd and wife Julie of Harrisonville, Mo. and David L. Shepherd and wife Therese of Independence, three grandchildren, six great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren and by a brother, Benny Burks and his wife Betty of Jefferson City, Mo.
