George J. Calovich, 83, of Raytown, MO passed away Monday, March 1, 2010 at Research Medical Center. Visitation will be from 6-7:30 PM Thursday, March 4, 2010 at Carson-Speaks Chapel, 1501 W. Lexington Ave., Independence, MO. The Rosary will be said at 7:30 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 AM Friday, March 5 at St. Cyril’s Catholic Church, 11231 Chicago, Sugar Creek, MO; entombment at Mt. Olivet Mausoleum.
George was born March 16, 1926 in Sugar Creek, MO to Frank and Katie (Novosel) Calovich. After graduation he joined the U.S. Navy and served on the U.S.S. Neshoba during World War II. Upon return from the Pacific, George met and married Betty Hill and raised two children. He was employed by Standard Oil, retiring after 35 years of service. George was a charter member of the Sugar Creek VFW, a life member of Independence Post 1000, was actively involved with the Boy Scout Troop 268, serving as scout master and advancement chairman, and was a member of the tribe of Mic-O-Say. In his spare time, George enjoyed yard work and gardening, traveling, and in the recent years, enjoyed the casinos.
George is survived by his wife of 62 years, Betty J. Calovich; daughter Kathleen Evans and husband Dwayne; son Frank Calovich and wife Theresa; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a host of extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers, Michael Carr and Frank Calovich. Contributions can be made to the American Heart Association.
