Hubert Roy “Bud” Canterbury, 78, of Derby, KS, formerly of Independence, MO, passed away, Sunday, March 31, 2013 at Via Christi St. Francis Hospital in Wichita, KS. Services will be 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 3, 2013 at the Speaks Suburban Chapel 18020 E. 39th St., Independence, MO 64055 with cremation to follow. The family will greet friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 2, 2013 at the chapel. Donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or to Helping Hospitalized Veterans Organization. Bud was born March 1, 1935 in Elwood, KS to Hubert R. and Bessie Marie (Cartmill) Canterbury. He grew up in Sibley and graduated from Buckner High School in 1953. He then went to CMSU and later joined the US Army Airborn as a paratrooper from 1955-56, served in Europe and had 568 jumps. He then worked for the US Postal Service based out of Independence, MO for 34 years until his retirement in 1990.. As a teenager in Sibley he helped rebuild Fort Osage and in his 60’s he built Habit for Humanity houses along side President Jimmy Carter. In the 1950’s was a DJ for KOKO and in Germany on Radio Free Europe. He played drums in a jazz band in college and was in the Messiah Chorus at the Auditorium several times in the 1980’s and 90’s. He was a tour guide at Bingham Waggoner estate and worldwide for various travel agencies. He traveled the world many times over. He was an amazing man who gave a lot of himself for his family and friends. He touched many lives in his 78 years will never be forgotten. He is survived by; his wife Sherrel of the home; 2 daughters, Cheryl Coffman of Independence, MO and Deb Dolsky and husband Tom of Topeka, KS; a son, John Canterbury and wife Julie of Merriam, KS; 3 step children, Angie Wolf and husband Tim, Chris Walters of Wichita, KS, and Ben Walters of Derby, KS; 2 sisters, Jean Steinman of Independence, MO and Thelma Anderson of Grand Prairie, TX; 12 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Robert Canterbury in 2013 and infant sisters, June and Shirley Marie.
