Orie I. Chappell, Jr., 86, of Independence, MO passed away Saturday, May 9, 2015. A memorial service will be held at a later time. Orie was born February 5th, 1929 in Independence, MO as one of two children to Edith (Tipton) and Orie Ireland Chappell, Sr. He graduated from Wheatland High School and proudly served his country in the Navy during the Korean War. He married his beloved Barbara (Suddarth) on December 2, 1966 and together they raised five children. He worked as a materials handler for the Lake City Army Ammunitions Plant for over 22 years before his retirement in 1988. He enjoyed his vegetable garden, watching sports, fishing, and camping. With the support of his wife, he ran for City Alderman of Sugar Creek in the late 1990’s and participated in the EPA and Missouri Natural Resources committees. His family remembers him as very dedicated to making a difference in his community and in his family. Orie had great work ethic and a strong moral character. He was friendly, loving, and he will be missed.
Survivors include wife of 48 years, Barbara; daughters, Sharon Chappell and Mary Stacey of Independence, MO; daughter Lynn Welsh and husband Mark of Salt Lake City, UT; son, Michael Stacey of Youngstown, AZ; thirteen grandchildren and numerous great and great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Jim Stacey and sister, Edith “Deed” Harris. The family encourages contributions to Wayside Waifs in his memory.
