Cheryl Diane Klinge-Higgins, a beloved figure in her community and an adoring family member, passed away on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, in Independence, Missouri. Born on March 17, 1951, Cheryl was a graduate of Van Horn High School, class of 1969, and began a career that spanned several roles in the medical field. She initially worked as a medication aide before becoming a certified medical assistant, dedicating her life to the care and well-being of others.
Family was the cornerstone of Cheryl's life. She was a devoted wife to Shari Joellen Higgins and a caring mother to her sons and daughter. She often spoke of how important it was for her to spend time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, emphasizing the joy they brought into her life, and she cherished every opportunity to create memories with them.
Cheryl was a woman of many passions and interests. She was proud of her service to the community as a volunteer Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) for many years, advocating for the best interests of children in need. She had a profound love for animals, particularly dogs, and could often be found enjoying the company of her beloved chihuahua, Lexi. An avid bird watcher, Cheryl found joy in the beauty of nature and was known for her culinary skills, especially her signature meatloaf, which was a favorite among family and friends. Her hobbies included watching television, with a particular fondness for murder mysteries and westerns, such as Gun Smoke.
She leaves behind her wife, Shari Joellen Higgins; sons, Mike Klinge (Jamie), Brandon Klinge (Wendy), Jordan “Scott” Klinge (Farrah), Ryan Higgins (Ashley), and Keanu Klinge-Higgins (Megan); daughter, Amy Wheldon (James); 21 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; brothers, Mike Storms and Jimmy Crawford; step-mother, Pat Storms; her precious pup, Lexi; along with many cousins who loved her to pieces. Cheryl was preceded in death by her father, Chester "Chett" Crawford; mother, Betty Maxine (Hughes) Crawford; and her siblings, Chester Lee Crawford and Kim Crawford.
Cheryl Diane Klinge-Higgins will be remembered for her compassionate spirit, her dedication to her family, and her love of life. She touched the hearts of many during her time, and her legacy will continue to live on through all those who loved her. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Cheryl’s memory to Phoenix Home Care & Hospice Independence Office, located at 14330 E 42nd St S, Independence, MO 64055.
