Millicent Ann Daugherty died February 10th, 2008 at Saint Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City where she was born 79 years ago. She also attended nurses training there as a young woman.
Millicent was one of the original founders of Music Arts Institute in Independence and became an astute business manager to complement her many musical talents. She loved her students, and they loved her, many looking to her for advice and mentoring on issues other than music.
Millicent married Gerald Daugherty 60 years ago last October. He survives her along with a son, Bruce Daugherty, Oakland, California, two grandchildren, Diana Rodriguez, Rebecca Daugherty both of Kansas City and a brother William Hixon Drummond and his wife Darlene of Indio, California. She is preceded in death by her daughter Jeri Lynn Dunn.
Millicent sang professionally as soprano soloist for Handel’s Messiah on many occasions but even with her many music responsibilities still found time to enjoy her home, family and a multitude of friends. Millicent’s legacy to be treasured amongst family and friends is her unique zest for life, and her unshakable faith in God. She was the driving force behind many loved ones’ dreams because of her belief and dedication in the talents of so many.
There will be a private burial. A memorial service open to the public will be held at the Stone Church Community of Christ in Independence, MO, at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 14, 2009. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to be made to The Music Arts Institute Fund at 2010 South Pearl, Independence MO 64050.
