Dennis Lynn Brown

February 16, 1950 — May 20, 2026

Dennis Lynn Brown, 76, of Independence, Missouri, was sent to his eternal home on May 20th, 2026 surrounded by the love of his family. Born on February 16, 1950, in Great Bend, Kansas, Dennis grew up in Hoisington, KS where he developed the character, work ethic, and faith that shaped his entire life.

Dennis graduated from Hoisington Rural High School and later attended Fort Hays Kansas University in Hays, Kansas. In High School, Dennis was very active. He played several sports that included football and basketball as a freshman. He was a part of the Hi-Y Buildings Fellowship service organization; the only organization of the student body whose specific purpose was to develop Christian character among boys. He participated in the Boys Glee club. His professional life was marked by dedication and excellence. Over a 45-year career in sales and marketing, he served with The Public Service Company of Colorado for 13 years and with ONEOK/ONE Gas for 30 years. He also worked with AT&T in Colorado and spent five years with RE/MAX Realtors in Missouri. His colleagues knew him as a steady, principled representative who took pride in serving others.

On June 13, 1981, Dennis married Karen Manon Wheeler in Independence, Missouri, beginning a devoted partnership that lasted more than four decades. Together, they built a family raising two boys, creating a life rooted in faith, service, and community.

Dennis was deeply committed to the Restoration Church of Jesus Christ, where he served faithfully as both Priest and then Elder. He served on the pastorate at Atherton and as Treasurer for the branch. He also served on the board for Zion’s Ridge Restoration Campgrounds and the CPRS Foundations Board, assisting in fundraising. Dennis was very involved in youth ministry in Mammoth Camp and teaching leadership skills through personality tests. Known for his humor and mischievous grin, he brought laughter wherever he went. Fondly nicknamed ‘Dennis the Menace’ by family during moments of teasing and laughter, he never lost his sense of humor. Even at his last birthday celebration, his joyful spirit shone through as he continued making others laugh. One of his fondest memories, still cherished, was baptizing his mother at age 83 and others into the church, including ordaining his son Matthew to the office of Teacher and his son Aaron to the office of Priest. His ministry was quiet, sincere, and grounded in compassion.

A lifelong supporter of youth and community programs, Dennis was active in the Boy Scouts of America, earning the prestigious Eagle Scout rank as a young man and later the God & Country Award. He remained involved throughout adulthood, encouraging the next generation with the same guidance he once received. He also participated in the Kiwanis Club and the Kansas City Regional Clean Cities organizations.

Dennis had a wide range of hobbies that reflected his curiosity, adventurous spirit, and love of discovery, including coin collecting, fishing, reading, hunting, metal detecting, and marble collecting. He especially loved history, finding joy in learning about the past and uncovering hidden stories and treasures along the way. Whether outdoors searching for artifacts or sharing historical facts and stories with others, he found happiness in life’s simple pleasures and in the excitement of discovery, both literal and figurative.

Throughout his life, Dennis lived in Hoisington, Kansas; Littleton, Colorado; and finally, Independence, Missouri, where he had made his home since 1983. He was proud of his English, Scottish, and Irish heritage and grateful for the opportunities each chapter of his life brought.

Dennis is survived by his wife, Karen, two sons and two daughters-in-law, Matthew Brown (Elizabeth) and Aaron Brown (Kelda), all of whom reside in Independence; grand dog Lily and grandchildren Winston and Dayton. He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald & Lula Brown, brother Kenneth, and sisters Karen & Judy.

Visitation will be held at Speaks (18020 E. 39th Street S. Independence MO 64055) from 6-8pm on Friday June 5th. A graveside service will follow at Mound Grove Cemetery (1818 N River Blvd Independence MO 64050). Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance and celebration of a life lived with integrity, wisdom, and faith.

Dennis will be remembered for his steady presence, his devotion to God, family, and the countless quiet ways he served others. Every morning, he would wake up and ask himself, “Who can I help today?” His legacy lives on in the lives he touched, the family he loved, and the example he set.
