August 12, 1931 — February 26, 2009

Betty “Joan” (Baldus) DeWalt, 77 of Independence, MO passed away Thursday, February 26, 2009 at the Kansas City Hospice House. Services will be 11:00 a.m., Monday, March 2, 2009 at the Carson-Speaks Chapel. Burial will be in Mt. Washington Forever Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Kansas City Hospice House or to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until service time Monday morning at the chapel. Joan was born August 12, 1931 in Bates City, MO to Al and Mildred (Ownings) Baldus and has been a lifelong area resident graduating from Northeast High School in 1948. She had worked for UMB Bank from 1981-95 in the accounting department. She enjoyed playing bridge, the theatre, her beloved pets and, most of all spending time with friends and family. She was a member of the Mt. Washington Baptist Church. She also held memberships in the KC Lionettes Club, Independence Young Matrons, and was a lifetime member of the Epsilon Sigma Alpha philanthropic sorority, where she was past state president. She was married to Carl D. DeWalt who preceded her in death in 1990 and the “Lovlies” Ella Jones and Gloria McGinty. Survivors include; a daughter, Dana Culbertson and husband Sam of Boulder, CO; a brother, Albert Ray Baldus and wife Lynn of Garden City, MO; 2 step grandchildren, Colleen Wilhelm and Callie Gartner; 4 great grandchildren; a special friend JoAnna Jones Grant of CO, “The Lovlies” Mary Lou Walker and Joan Walker and her dog child Oliver.
