Thomas "Tom" Dewey

January 10, 1950 — May 10, 2023

Thomas E. Dewey, 73, born in Lebanon, MO, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on May 10, 2023. He was a sweet and gentle soul, who was kind to anyone he met. During his younger years, He was an avid Boy Scout with Troop 356 and was a member of the Mic-O-Say Tribe. He later earned the rank of Eagle Scout and was given the Indian name of Fire Builder Early Descending Mist. He graduated from Van Horn High school in 1968, then attended Central Missouri State University. In the early days of his US Postal Service career, Thomas met the love of his life, Gloria Hurtado, and they wed on October 28, 1978. He later would retire from the North Kansas City US Postal Service as a Window Technician. Not ready to fully settle down, he would go on to be a Bus Driver for the Independence School District’s Transportation Department. During his time as a bus driver, he loved and cared for each of his young passengers. In his spare time, he was an amateur bowler, competing in numerous NABI tournaments and even bowling a perfect 300 game which got his name in the Hall of Fame museum of bowling in St. Louis, Missouri. He enjoyed golfing, collecting stamps and coins, and playing cards. He also loved to go fishing, especially for trout at Bennet Springs State Park. He was very creative whether it be wrapping presents, making derby carts, creating card protectors for poker, as well as making his very own bowling bag that carried 8 balls. He was also a sports fan, even coaching several of his son and daughter’s sports teams. He could always be found cheering on both the Kansas City Chiefs and Kansas City Royals.

Thomas was preceded in death by his father Edward Dewey, mother Betty Dickinson Dewey, and sister Constance Dewey Reed. He is survived by his wife Gloria Dewey, son Brian Dewey, and daughter Stephanie Clark (Michael). A visitation will be held for Thomas on May 19th, 2023 at St Mark’s Catholic Church located at 3736 S Lee’s Summit Rd, Independence, MO 64055 from 10:00-11:00 AM with a service immediately following at 11:00 AM.
