Diane Yvonne Speer, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away on July 31, 2025, in Leawood, Kansas, at the age of 79. Born on September 27, 1945, in Mission, Kansas to William Otto "Bud" Mitchum and Maxine M. (Seute) Mitchum, Diane's life was marked by love, passion, and an unwavering commitment to her family.
Diane enjoyed a fulfilling career, retiring as an office manager from ACH Foam Technologies. However, her most cherished role was that of a devoted mother and grandmother. Family was Diane's greatest joy. She raised her children and ran an in-home daycare, pouring her heart into every child in her care, which brought her immense satisfaction and pride. She was known for her loving and affectionate personality, always caring deeply for those around her. She took great joy in watching her children and grandchildren thrive in their activities, always cheering them on from the sidelines. Diane treasured every moment spent with her family, from watching sports to sharing memorable experiences that strengthened their bonds.
Diane embraced life with a vibrant spirit and could often be found listening to her favorite tunes from the ‘50s and ‘60s, as well as Queen and Kiss. Music was one of her great loves; she relished dancing and the moments doing so brought her undeniable joy, especially when her friends performed rock and country music.
Diane leaves behind a legacy imbued with tenderness, warmth, and a spirit that will never be forgotten. She is survived by her son, Lucas Speer, and his wife, April; her granddaughters, Megan Speer and Isabella Speer; her grandson, Adam Speer; her daughter-in-law, Molly Speer; her brothers, Bud Mitchum and his wife, Sharon, and Bob Mitchum; nephews, J.T. Mitchum, Phillip Mitchum, and Nicholas Mitchum; and nieces, Melody Mead and Melissa Paterson.
She was preceded in death by her sons, Adam Speer and Richard V. Speer II; her husband, Richard V. Speer; her father, William Otto "Bud" Mitchum; and her mother, Maxine M. (Seute) Mitchum. Diane will be lovingly remembered by all whose lives she touched.
A visitation in celebration of her life will be held at Carson-Speaks Chapel in Independence, Missouri, on August 8, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, followed by a Celebration of Life service from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM, where stories and memories will be shared, allowing all who knew her to honor a remarkable woman who filled the world with love.
