Bettie was born July 3, 1923. An Independence native, she was a direct descendant of Alexander Majors, the founder of the Pony Express. After graduating from Independence High School, her wanderlust spirit took her to Washington, D.C. to act as stenographer with The National Housing Authority. Bettie went on to receive her Bachelor of Science and Masters in English and Counseling from UMKC.
She subsequently taught English for 10 years at Central High School in K.C., MO. She married Wayne Dicker in 1945, after a romantic proposal in the Drum Room of the President’s Hotel. They had one loving daughter, Netta Carol, who went to be with our Lord in 1994.
Most lovingly known for her fondness of debate, quick wit and staunch support for the Republican Party, Bettie delighted in her frequent invitations to the inaugural balls of past Republican Presidents, most notably George W. in the year 2000.
Bettie was a frequent contributor to local and national news publications, and was owner and founder of the Jonsey Press in Independence, MO. Most recently Bettie owned and operated, with her husband, and antiques showroom in Englewood and was a weekly contributor to the Examiner’s “Ask the Pro”. Her unyielding love of life and sense of adventure will live on to encourage all of those who knew her.
She will be greatly missed.
