Celebrating the Life of Dorothy Lee Lewis

Dorothy Lee Housman-Lewis, a beloved aunt, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on July 12, 2026, having recently celebrated her momentous 100th birthday. Born in Kansas City, Missouri, on May 15, 1926, to William Otto Housman and Orpha Starbuck Housman, Dorothy lived a full and vibrant century marked by dedication to her family, a career she took great pride in, and a joy for the simple pleasures of life.

Dorothy grew up in Kansas City, graduating from Northeast High School before attending Kansas City Junior College. Her sharp mind and organizational talents led her to a fulfilling, 40-year career as a secretary for Montgomery Ward, where her dedication and work ethic made her a highly respected member of the team. On December 22, 1956, Dorothy married the love of her life, John Robert Lewis. Together, they shared decades of love and companionship.

While Dorothy’s roots were firmly planted in Kansas City, her adventurous spirit took her to Denver, Colorado, where she lived for a time, before she eventually returned home to the community she loved so dearly.

Dorothy was a woman of many passions. She was a true family historian, finding immense joy in genealogy. She spent countless hours researching her family tree, keeping exceptionally detailed profiles of all her relatives to ensure that future generations would always know their heritage.

An active member of her local Garden Club, Dorothy had a legendary green thumb and a particular fondness for peonies, which she grew with love and pride. When she wasn't tending to her garden or her family trees, Dorothy could be found cheering passionately for the Kansas City Chiefs, the Kansas City Royals, and following the excitement of NASCAR.

She had a famously delightful sweet tooth, never turning down a treat—especially chocolate, fresh-baked cookies, or a scoop of ice cream. Dorothy also had a deep affection for small dogs, holding a very special place in her heart for her beloved Scottish Terrier, Oddie, and her long-haired dachshund, Cash. To unwind, her absolute favorite escape was vacationing in the sunny warmth of Longboat Key, Florida, where she made cherished memories by the ocean.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John Robert Lewis (who passed on July 9, 1990); her father, William Otto Housman; her mother, Orpha Housman; and her brother, Ralph Housman Sr.

Her legacy of love, curiosity, and warmth lives on through those who survive her, including Chuck Housman; Dave Housman; Mandy Martinez and her son, Matt; and Mark and Vickie Housman, along with their children, Kevin Housman and Jessica Iske.

Dorothy’s remarkable 100 years on this Earth were a gift to all who knew her. Her stories, her meticulously kept history, and her bright spirit will never be forgotten.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Carson-Speaks Chapel, 1501 W. Lexington Ave., Independence, MO. A private burial service will take place the following day, Wednesday, July 22nd.
