Dorothy B Salyer, age 105, passed away on May 12, 2026, at White Oaks Assisted Living in Independence, MO. Dorothy was born on April 1, 1921, in Marshall, MO. She was the daughter of Lloyd and Roberta Brown.
She graduated from Missouri Valley College with a teaching degree. During WW2, she worked at several places including Jeep. She then taught school in Waverly, MO. and during that time met Harold Salyer. They were married in 1950 and moved to Independence, MO.
She was a strong “Old School” businesswoman, opening several businesses under the name of “Do-Sal”. These included Do-Sal Western Wear, which was a respected business in Independence for nearly 50 years. She also had antique stores, collectibles and estate sales. She was well known throughout Independence and Jackson County, Missouri. Dorothy was always busy and always “The Boss”.
Dorothy loved gardening, camping and fishing. She said irises were her favorite flower and she had many beautiful examples of iris in her garden at her beloved 1900’s stone home in Independence, MO.
We want to thank Roseanne Boyd and everyone at White Oaks Assisted Living. She loved each and every one of the staff. She was very popular there and was known for always calling for “Hot Coffee.”
Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Cindy Salyer and many nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold, son William (Billy) Salyer, brother Robert Brown and her parents Lloyd and Roberta Brown.
Visitation will be held Friday, May 15, 2026, from 1:00 - 3:00 pm at Carson-Speaks Chapel in Independence, MO.
