Laura Mae Dorton, age 66, passed away on November 25, 2015, in North Kansas City, surrounded by her loving family.
A celebration of life will be held at the Salvation Army Church, 14700 E. Truman Rd. in Independence, on Saturday, December 5, 2015, at 11:00am. The family suggests that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to St. Luke’s Mid-America Heart Institute, 4401 Wornall Rd., Kansas City, MO 64111.
Laura was born on February 26, 1949, in Kansas City, MO, to Charles and Arlene (LaQuette) Collins. She graduated from William Chrisman High School in the class of 1967. She met James Dorton, Sr. in the summer of her sophomore year on a double date, and they married on December 23, 1966. They began raising a family, and had five beautiful children. Laura worked in ER Admissions for 35 years for various hospitals, including Park Lane, MCI, Independence Regional, and Centerpoint. She loved cross-stitching and knitting, playing the piano, bowling, fishing, and church activities. She was full of life and had a generous and caring heart. She was never without a smile, and she will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
Survivors include her husband of 50 years, Jim Dorton, Sr.; children, James Dorton, Jr., Charlie (Rhonda) Dorton, Diana (William) Mitchell, and Sam (Emma) Dorton; grandchildren, Curtis Dorton, Christina Dorton, Heather Dewan, Steven Dorton, Kayla Shuman, Antonia Mitchell, Grace Dorton, Andrea Mitchell, Rebekkah Dorton, and Andrew Mitchell; one great-grandson, Michael Dewan, and one great-granddaughter yet to be born, Kamryn Pulliam; siblings, David Keiser, Robert Collins, and Shauna Sheets; and many nieces and nephews.
Laura is preceded in death by her daughter, Jennifer Shuman, her parents, and brothers, Harold Keiser and Ronnie Collins.
