Independence

Elsie Emma (Schaefer) Hight, 85, of Independence, Missouri, passed away on Thursday, November 20, 2025, at NorthCare Hospice House in Kansas City, Missouri.

A visitation will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, December 5, at Carson-Speaks Chapel, 1501 W. Lexington Ave., Independence, Missouri. A memorial service will follow at 2:00 p.m.

Elsie was born February 5, 1940, in Brooklyn, New York, to Frederick and Elise Schaefer. She moved with her family to Independence, where she grew up and later graduated from William Christman High School. Following her education, Elsie attended Graceland College, earning an associate's degree in Secretarial Science. She retired from the Blue Springs School District and loved working with children. Elsie worked for many years at Williams Yates Elementary as a lunch lady and library aide.

In 1966, she married the love of her life, Thomas Hight. Together they shared 52 years of marriage, building a warm and welcoming home in Independence, where they raised their family and remained throughout their lives.

Elsie was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She found joy in socializing, volunteering, and spending time with friends and family. Her genuine warmth and friendly nature made her a cherished presence in the lives of all who knew her. A woman of deep faith, she was a longtime and dedicated member of The Remnant Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

She is survived by her two sons: Jeffrey Hight and his wife, Nicole, of Madison, Alabama; and Jason Hight and his wife, Beth of Grain Valley, Missouri. She also leaves behind four beloved grandchildren—Gabriel and Corbin Hight, and Jillian and Samantha Hight—who brought her great joy.

Elsie was preceded in death by her parents, Frederick and Elise Schaefer, her cousin Roy Shaefer, and by her husband, Thomas Hight.

Elsie’s life was defined by kindness, service, and steadfast love for her family. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered by those blessed to have known her.
