Evelyn M Elvin, 99, of Lees Summit, Mo. passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 21, 2015, surrounded by her family. A funeral service will be held at Christ United Methodist Church, 14506 E 39th St, Independence, MO on Tue. Oct. 27th at 2pm with visitation proceeding at 1pm. A graveside service will be held at noon on October 31st at Laurel Cemetery in Haven, KS. Evelyn was born on Feb. 27th, 1916 in Galva KS to Albert A. and Elvira Mathilda (Peterson) Johnson. She was preceded in death by her 7 brothers and sisters. After graduating from high school in Galva she attended Southwestern College in Winfield, KS & taught for one year. During that year she married her high school sweetheart, Carl F. Elvin on Oct. 17, 1936. Together they had 3 children. She was a devoted mother and grandmother who doted on all members of her family alike. After her children were grown and raising families of their own she attended Wichita State University. Her professional career included several years serving as executive secretary to the president of Friends University. She retired at the age of 73 and enjoyed reading, playing cards, square dancing, water aerobics, baking and traveling with friends and family. She is a long time member of Christ United Methodist Church and Eastern Star. Survivors include Charles K. Elvin (Sandy) of Lenexa, Karlene M. Preston (Jerrold) of Holden, MO, and J. Barry Elvin (Lynne) of Thompson Station, TN; 10 grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren, nine great, great grandchildren, two sister-in-laws, Olive & Vivian and numerous nieces and nephews who will miss her.
