Everett Eugene "Gene" Gates

Everett Eugene "Gene" Gates, a cherished father, devoted husband, and proud veteran, passed away on Sunday, July 19, 2026, in Kansas City, Missouri, just days before his 93rd birthday. Born July 27, 1933, in Independence, Missouri, Gene's life was one marked by dedication to his family, his work, and his passions.

A lifelong resident of Missouri, Gene attended William Chrisman High School in Independence. He carried the lessons he learned as a young man - hard work and reliability - through every chapter of his life. Upon completing his schooling, he answered the call to serve his country, enlisting in the United States Army. He served honorably as a Private First Class during the Korean War from 1953 to 1955, a period that instilled in him a profound respect for duty and service.

Upon returning home, Gene began a long and respected career as a carman with Burlington Northern, where he worked from 1955 until his retirement in 1984. Gene was known for his exceptional work ethic; his colleagues remember him for his unwavering commitment and the pride he took in a job well done. Gene grew up in the Baptist faith, which remained an enduring influence throughout his life, shaping his values and his interactions with others.

Outside of work, Gene found joy on the golf course. For decades, he played nine holes each morning before work at Stayton Meadows in Raytown, Missouri - a ritual he cherished deeply. He also expressed his passion for golf through meticulous care and customization of his clubs, often building, repairing, regripping, and re-shafting them in his spare time. When he was no longer able to play in his later years, it was with a heavy heart that he set aside this daily practice. His love for crafting extended into woodworking, inspired by his work with golf clubs - creating shelves, display cases, and shadow boxes that showcased his skill and attention to detail. Classic Mustangs held a special place in his heart, and he enjoyed the aesthetics and history these cars represented.

Gene is survived by his daughter, Gina Brashear (Mike); son, David Gates (Jane); grandchildren, Eric Brashear, Joseph Brashear, Lindsay Gates, Seth Gates, and Taylor Connor; and great-grandchildren, Johnathan Brashear, Zoey Brashear, Brooklyn Keith, and Delaney Goff. Gene was preceded in death by his father, Everett Minor Gates; mother, Bessie Ella (Holley) Gates; and wife, Shirley Gates, whose memory he kept close to his heart after her passing.

Gene's memory will live on in the stories shared, the lessons taught, and the quiet strength he demonstrated every day. His presence will be deeply missed, and his legacy will remain cherished by all who had the privilege to know him.
