Dorothy Lorene Farrand, 91 of Sugar Creek, MO passed away Friday, April 20, 2012 at Centerpoint Medical Center. Services will be 10:00 a.m., Monday, April 23, 2012 at the Carson-Speaks Chapel 1501 W. Lexington Ave., Independence, MO 64052. Burial will follow in Mt. Washington Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 6 to 8:00 p.m., Sunday evening at the chapel. Donations may be made to Autism Society of the Heartland, P.O. Box 860984, Shawnee, KS. 66286-0984. Dorothy was born July 30, 1920 in Independence, MO to E. Bruce and Dorothy G. (Alexander) Smith and has been a lifelong Sugar Creek resident. She supported the WWII war effort by working at Lake City Army Ammunition Plant. She later worked in the accounting department at Montgomery Ward and later was a tax examiner for the IRS until she retired in 1977. She was an expert at crossword puzzles and completed them daily, was an avid reader and loved fishing, traveling, bowling, and also did quilting and embroidery. She was a member of the VFW post #3976 Women’s Auxiliary, Standard Oil retirees club and was a past president of PTA. She was also a member of the Sugar Creek United Methodist Church. She was married to Robert G. Farrand, Sr. on November 12, 1935; he preceded her in death in December of 1998. Survivors include; a son, Robert Farrand, Jr. and his wife Sonja of Overland Park, KS; a daughter, Janice Hobbs of Independence, MO; a sister, Katherine Newton of Lee’s Summit, MO; a brother, James Smith of Lee’s Summit, MO; 4 grandchildren, Randy Hobbs and his wife Diana, Christopher Hobbs, Kimberly Kuehn and her husband Kris and Tracy Berrigan and her husband Patrick; 8 great grandchildren, Aaron, Jamie and Joshua Hobbs, Korbin, Kailee and Kelsey Kuehn and Griffin and Danielle Berrigan and 3 great great grandchildren, Jackson, Katie and Aubree Hobbs. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Evelyn Hollis.
