Nell C. Flanagan Danner, 86 of Independence, MO passed away, Saturday, November 6, 2010 at the St. Luke’s East Hospital in Lee’s Summit, MO. Cremation is planned with a memorial mass to be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 10, 2010 at the St. Mark’s Catholic Church. Private inurnment will be at a later date. Nell was born March 29, 1924 in Olustee, OK. to Ellis A. and Dicy (Wilson) Cleveland. She graduated from Oklahoma State University where she was a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority. She later did postgraduate studies at Vanderbilt University and UMKC. She was married to James W. Flanagan on February 14, 1949; she later married Earl E. Danner on February 16, 1985. Nell worked as an English teacher in the Independence School District. She was later on staff at the Truman Presidential Library, serving many years as a volunteer after retirement. She was a longtime member of the Trinity Episcopal Church, and served at various times as church schoolteacher, member of Vestry, lector, and member of the Altar Guild. She converted to the Catholic faith over 4 years ago and was a member of the St. Mark’s Catholic Church where she served on the Human Concerns Commission. She was also a member of the Independence Pioneers Chapter of D.A.R., and the Mary Paxton Study Class and a former member of the American Association of University Women. She is survived by a son, Michael Flanagan and his wife, Sarah of Overland Park, KS; 2 daughters, Lucy Flanagan of Austin, TX and Sara Short of Lufkin, TX; a grandson, Barry Flanagan of New York City, NY; 2 step grandchildren, Olivia and William Short and a special friend, Neil Johnson. She was preceded in death by parents, infant daughter, brother and both husbands. She was profoundly grateful for all the blessings of her life and was a firm believer that the best is yet to come.
