Mary Belle Flowers, 95, of Independence, MO, passed away, Monday, July 5, 2010 at the Villages of Jackson Creek. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m., Friday, July 9, 2010 at Nativity of Mary Catholic Church 10017 E. 36th Terr., Independence, MO. Burial will follow in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. A rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m., Thursday evening at the Carson-Speaks chapel. Mary was born February 22, 1915 in Chattanooga, TN the daughter of John and Anna (Hewitt) Baskette. She grew up in St. Louis, MO, where on February 14, 1935, she married Alfred J. Flowers, who preceded her in death on April 25, 1987. Her employment in St. Louis included working at an advertising company and a department store. After moving to Independence in 1948, she was employed at the Lake City Ammunition Plant during the Korean Conflict, Bundschu’s Department Store, Bank of Independence and Blue Ridge Bank. She retired from the Social Security Administration in 1982 after 17 years of dedicated service. Her most remembered and cherished commitment was to her two surviving children, Kenneth A. Flowers Castleton, VT and Kathleen M. Council of Shawnee, KS; five grandchildren, Joseph, Michael and Stephen Flowers, Valerie Galbraith and Alex Council and six great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Joedy Burton of Cincinnati, OH and Rozella Coates of Dallas, TX. She was a kind and very generous person to everyone she met. She was a wonderful and loving wife, mother and grandmother who will be remembered with great gratitude and love.
