Franklin Edward Lewis, fondly known as Frank, was born on June 20, 1939, in Independence, Missouri. He dedicated over 30 years of his life as a biology teacher at Hickman Mills, where his passion for education and dedication to his students left an impact on countless students and colleagues. Frank’s journey through education began at William Chrisman High School, and he furthered his studies by earning a master’s degree in Ecology from the University of Central Missouri (which was previously known as CMSU). It was during his college years that he met Myra, the love of his life. They shared over 50 wonderful years of marriage before her passing in 2015.
A man of many stories, Frank was known for his unique personality and the countless friendships he forged throughout his life. His intelligence, wit, and kindness touched the lives of both his students and friends. His legacy extends beyond the classroom, as he was also a conservationist at heart with an impressive collection of antique fishing lures. He was also a member of the NFLCC (National Fishing Lure Collectors Club). An avid outdoorsman, Frank cherished the time he spent hunting and fishing with his friends, including many memorable trips for fishing expeditions.
Frank passed away peacefully on November 3, 2025, in Independence, Missouri, leaving behind a world bettered by his presence and the invaluable lessons he taught to those around him. He is remembered not only for his contributions to education and conservation but also for the love and joy he brought into the lives of so many. Frank will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Frank's passing is preceded by his parents, Ed and Beulah Lewis; his beloved wife, Myra Lewis; and his sisters, Velma, Louise, and Wanda. His remarkable legacy lives on through his children, Michael T. Lewis (Joni) and Leanne Downs (David), and his grandsons, Jack Lewis, Jake Lewis, Dean Downs, and David Downs.
A celebration of life will be held December 13th, 2025, at The American Legion Post 21 in Independence, Missouri to honor Frank's life.
