Althea Ganders

Althea C. Ganders, 87, Independence, MO passed away Sunday, April 26, 2009.

Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Thursday, April 30, 2009 at Speaks Suburban Chapel. 18020 E. 39th St. Independence, MO 64055. Burial will follow at Salem Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 PM Wednesday at the funeral home. The family suggests memorial contributions to Wayside Waifs, 3901 Martha Truman Rd., Kansas City, MO 64137.

Althea was born May 23, 1921 in Hadar, NE to Henry and Cora (Heckman) Schwichtenberg. She graduated in 1940 from Pierce High School. Althea married Allen Ganders and moved to Independence in the late 1940’s where they resided until their death. She had many jobs throughout her lifetime. She worked for Hanthorne and Randall Schools as head cashier in the cafeteria for several years. She then worked for seventeen years for the Vendo Company in the accounts receivable department. Following that, she worked for Macy’s, then Dillard’s for nineteen years in customer service. Althea retired from work at the age of 81. Even then, she worked briefly as an elections judge. Althea was a very active member of the Susquchanna Village Homes Association. She was president of the association for two terms and served many years on the board. She enjoyed planning the Village garage sales, Christmas dinners, Christmas lighting contests, Easter egg hunts, and various other business meetings. She loved her house, her friends, her job, sewing and her animals. She will be missed by her family, friends, and neighbors.

Althea was preceded in death by her husband, Allen M. Ganders; brother, Marvin “Bud” Schwichtenberg; and her parents.

Survivors include her two daughters, Betty and her husband Jon Kurtz of Buckner; and Marsha and her husband Harold Howell of Blue Springs; several nieces, one nephew, JoLee Stillwell of Champagne, IL; Roberta Gander of Warrensburg; Esther Tardino of Warsaw; Marilyn Collingsworth of Arkansas; Carol Simmons of Nebraska; Diane Thornton of Nebraska; SueAnn AlHarasheh of California; Larry Simmons of Tennessee.
