Marjorie “Ellen” (McElroy) Garlick, 82, of Independence, Missouri, passed away December 15, 2010 at Centerpoint Medical Center in Independence. Ellen was born to Vaughn and Marjorie (Kester) McElroy on December 7, 1928 in Moorcroft, Wyoming. She and her family moved from Moorcroft to Lamoni, Iowa in 1932. Ellen graduated from Lamoni High School in 1946 and from Graceland College (Iowa) in 1948. From the time she earned her degree from Graceland until retirement in 1990, Ellen was an Executive Secretary for several companies including Farm Journal and Hallmark. Ellen married Leonard Garlick in August 1964 at the Stone Church in Independence, Missouri. After their marriage, Ellen and Leonard lived in Cedar Falls and Iowa City while Leonard pursued his PhD. Upon his graduation, they moved to Baltimore, Maryland in 1970. Upon retirement in 1990, Ellen and Leonard moved back to Kansas City. She was a lifetime member of the Community of Christ church and held priesthood offices of Deacon and Elder. Ellen was active in the Community of Christ Pleasant Heights Congregation, NutriNet, and the Groves’ Gift Shop. Her greatest joy was in serving others. She was preceded in death by her husband Leonard, parents Vaughn and Marjorie, sister Jane Walling and husband Raymond, brother-in-law Bryce Booker, and nephews Pete Walling and Andrew Booker. She is survived by Brother Bill McElroy and wife Doris of Lamoni, Iowa, Sister Ruth Booker of Midland, Texas, and Brother Bob McElroy and wife Kim, of Norfolk, Nebraska as well as several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, December 29, 2010, 1:00pm at Pleasant Heights Community of Christ Church with visitation after the service.
