Robert Neil Garrett, 66, Independence, MO, passed away Saturday, June 4, 2011 at the University of Kansas Medial Center.
A memorial service celebrating Robert’s life will be at 7:00 PM Tuesday, June 7, 2011 at Speaks Suburban Chapel; 18020 E. 39th St. Independence, MO. Visitation will be from 6:00-7:00 PM Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society; MidAmerica Chapter.
Robert was born August 14, 1944 in Keokuk, IA the son of Elmer and Roberta (Lewis) Garrett. He was a graduate of Nauvoo, IL High School and attended Graceland College. He received his Bachelor’s of Arts degree from Western Illinois University and his Masters of Arts degree from Park University, Parkville, MO. Robert retired as an Agency Manager for Guide One Insurance Company. He was a member of Stone Church Congregation and was an Ordained Community of Christ minister and held the office of high priest. Robert was a member of the first Center Stake of Zion Peace Corps, serving church and neighborhoods in community development. He was on the originating staff of the Independence Plan for Neighborhood Councils, which twice earned Independence the City of the Year Award for its citizen involvement and community betterment. He was a man that was deeply devoted to the cause of Zion, to family, and to community – all of which he approached in characteristic good humor and enthusiasm. He especially loved to play with words, and ponder the mysteries of life.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife, LoAnne Garrett; daughter, Lindsay Tarwater and her husband Matthew; sisters, Evelyn Dustin, Marian Killpack and Kathy Garrett, and numerous nieces, nephews.
