Gary Wayne Summers

November 16, 1945 — November 30, 2023

Kansas City

Gary Wayne Summers went to be with the Lord on November 30, 2023, in Kansas City, Missouri. He is not "dead" but simply "changed addresses".  He was born on November 16, 1945, in the same city and leaves behind a legacy of kindness and generosity.

Gary had a fulfilling career at Armco Steel, where he dedicated 28 years of his life. Known for his exceptional work ethic and reliability, he was a valued employee throughout his tenure. Following his retirement from Armco Steel, Gary embarked on a new chapter of his life driving delivery trucks for Ryder and Penske. His commitment to hard work remained unwavering even after leaving his long-standing job. Graduating from William Chrisman High School, Gary received an education that would shape the foundation of his life. His thirst for knowledge extended beyond the classroom as well. From 1975 to 1991, Gary proudly was a big part of the Boy Scouts of America with his son. Sharing his expertise with others brought him great joy and satisfaction. With his faith and love in Jesus Christ, Gary was a member of Berean Free Will Baptist Church for 48 years.  He spent many years teaching Sunday School and running the church's sound boards as well as cutting the church's grass for most of those years.

Outside of work and academia, Gary indulged in his favorite pastime: bowling. An avid bowler, he participated in various leagues throughout his life. He relished the opportunity to bowl with his family and often took time out to enjoy this treasured activity with his grandkids. These moments spent at the alley fostered enduring bonds and created cherished memories that will be forever treasured by those who knew him best.

Gary's personality exuded warmth and compassion. People gravitated towards him because of his patient and calming presence. He was always willing to lend a helping hand at any hour without hesitation or judgement. Gary touched the lives of many with his kindhearted nature, earning him immense love and respect from all who were fortunate enough to know him.

Surrounded by the love of his dear family, Gary Wayne Summers peacefully passed away in Kansas City, Missouri. His departure leaves a void in the lives of those who loved him, but his spirit will live on through the countless lives he enriched. Although he may no longer be physically present, his legacy of kindness, selflessness, and unwavering love will continue to inspire and guide us.

He is preceded in death by his parents; Thomas and Lucille Summers, his grandmother-in-law; Verna Cain, and his brother-in-law; V.E. Robertson. He is survived by the love of his life and wife; Barbara Summers, his children; Michael Summers (Tammy) and Andrea Horn (Jimmie), as well as 5 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services to honor Gary's life will be held at Carson-Speaks Chapel located at 1501 W Lexington Ave, Independence, MO 64052. A visitation will take place on December 4, 2023, from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM, followed by a funeral service from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. These services provide an opportunity for family and friends to come together to pay their respects and celebrate the remarkable life of Gary Wayne Summers.

If you wish to honor Gary's life outside of the tradition of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to be made in memory of Gary to St. Luke's Hospice House. This gesture is a testament to Gary's lifelong commitment to helping others and will undoubtedly continue making a positive impact as he did during his time with us.
