Georgia Mae Milam, 91, of Independence, MO passed away peacefully at home on December 9th, 2025. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Kenneth M. Milam, and son Brian K. Milam. She is survived by her son Richard Milam, his wife Sherri, siblings, Dot Chadwick, Jean Hinken, and Bill Lawson, her long-time companion John Hupman, and her treasured friend and caregiver Peggy Kyle.
Although Georgia aspired to be a movie star at an early age, she decided on the noble career of Homemaker. It was anything but routine, as she made it her life’s work to care for not only her family, but for countless friends.
Georgia was entrusted with the care of so many children over her lifetime; she would never turn down a request to watch after them. When Rick had his telecom business, Georgia would often spend her days at that office overseeing and nurturing the infant and toddler - they didn’t work there but their mother did. It may have been unconventional, but it was great for the children and parents. If you needed help around the house, Georgia would always make herself available for whatever needed to be done.
If you ever had the good fortune to be at her home at dinner time, you would get the best meal. She would set the food down on the table and say ’now this probably won’t be fit to eat’. It was always the best food ever and you never went away hungry.
Georgia loved the holidays and having the extended family and friends all together sharing their favorite dishes, laughs, and stories. She was the ‘organizer in chief’ making sure we had plenty of food and lots of variety. Of course, her beloved Kenny wasn’t allowed to eat the cakes, pies, and cookies – if it tasted good, he was to spit it out!
If you got sick, you called Georgia; she would commiserate but always had advice for how to treat your ailment. Georgia gave both of her children the love of music. Although they went in different directions, she was the inspiration that kindled their flames. When Georgia’s eyes failed her, friends and family would read to her. There were countless hours spent on the back porch reading non-fiction. She loved to learn.
The saying that ‘age knows no boundaries’ was so true with Georgia. She had genuine connections with people of all ages. Everyone felt at ease around her, and the children always wanted to talk to ‘aunt’ Georgia - she just made them feel special.
We have been so blessed to have her in our lives. Friends and family are invited to come together on Tuesday, December 16th, at 2:00 pm for the Funeral Service, at Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E 39th St S, Independence, MO 64055.
