Albert H. Gettings, 83, passed away April 17, 2008 at his home at Heritage Farms in Blue Springs, MO. Al was born on May 5, 1924 in Gossett, IL, and graduated from Carmi Township High School in 1942. He served in the U.S. Navy as a Naval Aviator during WWII in photo intelligence. He retired from Trans World Airlines after 33 years of service logging over 25,000 hours. After retirement, Al built his own plane from a kit and purchased several antique planes, some of which were donated to museums. Flying was his passion. Al is survived by his wife of four years, Anna Vergene Gettings (Smith-Hamilton) of Carmi, IL; and his step-sister, Len Rose Thompson of Grayville, IL. He joins his second wife, Helen Maggie (Vandenberg) Gettings. Other surviving family members include his two daughters (from a prior marriage to Bettye L. Gettings of Kearney, MO) Lisa Jones of Kansas City, MO and Kelly Wilson of Oklahoma City, OK; and his granddaughters, Macy Lynn McFarlin and Kelsey Lauren McFarlin, also of Oklahoma. A memorial visitation will be held from 1-2:00 p.m. on Monday, April 21, with a service to follow at 2:00 p.m. at the Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th St., Independence, MO. Al’s ashes will be laid to rest at the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery, Higginsville, MO. Contributions may be made to a charity of your choice.
