Betty Jo Grant, aged 87, died Friday, February 21, 2014, in Ottawa, Kansas. The former Independence resident had been ill following a heart attack in January. Services will be 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, February 26, 2014 at the Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th St., Independence, MO 64055. Burial will follow in Mound Grove Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 6 to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, evening at the chapel. Donations may be made to the Salvation Army. Mrs. Grant was born January 24, 1927, in Independence, Missouri, the oldest child of Kenneth and Margaret (Harrington) Morford. After graduating from William Chrisman High School in 1945, she attended Graceland College, earning an A.A. degree in Home Economics. She married Joseph L. Grant in 1950. During her career she worked for the Independence Examiner, JC Penney and Spiegel. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting and spending time with her friends and family. Mrs. Grant was a long-time church secretary at the South Crysler RLDS Congregation, a position she later filled at the Farview Restoration Branch. While at South Crysler, she also taught vacation Bible school classes and sang in the choir. She served as an Oriole and Girl Scout leader as well as a den mother. Mrs. Grant was predeceased by her parents, her husband, and two sisters, Marilyn Morford and Virginia Sader. She is survived by her children, Deborah Grant of Plano, Texas, David (Sharon) Grant of Roseville, Michigan, and Bequi (Rick) Hicks of Ottawa, Kansas; a sister, Audrey (Larry) Pederson of Odessa, Texas; a brother, Kenneth A. Morford, Jr. of Independence; 6 grandchildren, Amber Shumate, Sarah Hicks, Hannah Grant, Heather Grant, Ryan Hicks and Zach Hicks and 2 great grandchildren, Noah and Dax Hicks.
