Harold D. Gundy died on October 29, 2009. Harold was born in Harrisonville, MO on July 4, 1920. He joined the Air Force and was a navigator in World War II. He flew one mission with the 498th, 73rd Wing from Saigon. In 1951-52 he was in the Korean War and flew another 50 missions. During that time, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. Harold was an avid volunteer of many local services. He was a loving husband, father, step-father and grandfather. Returning from Korea, he worked at the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant for 30 years where he was an engineering supervisor in the primer manufacturing and explosives areas. After retirement, he accidentally involved himself in consulting work in the civilian ammunition industry. That involved much travel including trips to Pakistan and Switzerland. Harold was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 8101 in Buckner, American Legion Post 21 in Independence, the Korean War Veterans Association and the Disabled Veterans. Harold was preceded in death by his parents, Avon and Bess (Dunn) Gundy, and a sister, Ina Lee. He is survived by his wife, Martha whom he married in 1973; children Gail Ballew and her husband, Chuck, AZ; Karen Street, Doug Hein and his wife, Sherry, and Darrell Hein all of Blue Springs; Grandchildren Catherine Dombro, CA; Fred Ballew, FL; Tera Werths, GA; Sarah Kipping, Kansas City; Jack Street, Caitlin Hein, Kelcie Hein and Emily Hein all of Blue Springs; Derek Hein and Danielle Hein of Independence; three great-grandchildren, and family Gary and Ginny Hemphill of Gladstone. The family suggests memorial contributions to Kansas City Hospice House or your favorite charity. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 31, 2009 at the Speaks Buckner Chapel. The family will greet friends from 10:00 a.m., until service time Saturday at the chapel. Private burial with full military honors will be in Missouri State Veterans Cemetery, Higginsville, MO.
