Robert Stayton Hall, age 87, of Independence, MO. passed away on Friday, January 2, 2009, surrounded by his family.
Bob was born on July 12, 1921, in Kansas City, MO. and was adopted when he was three days old by James O. Hall and Bessie Lowe Hall. He attended grade school and high school in Independence, MO. until halfway through his junior year. Because of the distance between his house and the school, he chose to stop attending and acquired his G.E.D.
He joined the marines in 1941. As a corporal, he served his country in World War II in the Pacific from 1942-1944, with special schooling as a scout sniper and military policeman. After returning to the U.S. in the fall of 1944, he met the love of his life Sgt. Viola Szpak in the chow line at Camp Lejeune, NC. They were married in Cleveland, Ohio in January 1946, and were married for 61 years.
Bob and Viola returned to his home of Independence, MO where they started their lives together. Bob began working for Standard Oil in 1947, and remained there until his retirement in 1980. He was actively involved with his fellow Standard Oil Retirees.
In addition to his job at Standard Oil, Bob also enjoyed farming his 28 acres, on which he raised cattle and hogs. He also gardened to feed his six children. He taught his family to get their hands dirty, as he made everyone pitch in—even down to the youngest great-grand child.
Bob’s passion for baseball took him to fifty consecutive Kansas City home openers, and he held season tickets for twenty years. His goal was to visit every major league baseball stadium in the U.S., of which he only missed a few. As a team, he and his wife enjoyed dancing, playing cards with family and friends, going on family cruises, and, most of all, large family gathering. His favorite saying was “the more the merrier” and he was fortunate to enjoy the best of both.
Thank you, Dad, for creating the “Hall Foundation” where everyone was loved and welcomed. The memories of all those good times will never be forgotten.
Bob was preceded in death by his wife Viola. He is survived by two sons: Robert S. Hall Jr. DDS and wife, Bonnie, of Topeka, Kan., and Jim Hall and wife, Karen, of Blue Springs, MO.; four daughters: Linda Taylor and husband, Robert, of Blue Springs, Christine Peery of Grain Valley, Barbara McCulley and husband, Paul, of Independence, and Marianne McCollam and husband, Shane, of Blue Springs; 17 grandchildren: Jared Peery, Cindy Taylor, Cathy (Joe) Phillips, Sarah (Paul) Dorey, Robert Taylor Jr., Ifo (Jennifer) Atagi, Stayton (Kristina) Atagi, Jasmin (Jacob) Northcut, Hunter (Jennifer) Atagi, Jacob (Megan) Gibler, Bob (Amy) Gibler, Brianne McCulley, Kyle McCulley, Mike (Stephanie) Peterman, Stacey Hall, Julie Hall, and Mike Hall; and 18 great-grandchildren: Katelyn and J.D.
