Delma Fern Harless passed away on Jan. 25, 2015. Services will be 10 am, Friday at First United Methodist Church of Independence, 400 W. Maple Ave., Independence, MO 64050; interment at Oakland Cemetery. Visitation will be 6-8 pm, Thursday at Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th St., Independence, MO 64055. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 400 W. Maple Ave., Independence MO 64050.
Delma Fern was born at the Independence Sanitarium and Hospital on Feb. 26, 1928. As a tiny baby she was kept warm by being wrapped in cotton batting. She grew up at 414 E Kansas in Independence and graduated from William Chrisman High School in 1946.
After spending one year in college at Central Methodist in Fayette MO, she married Gilbert James “Jimmie” Harless, Jr. in 1948 at the First United Methodist Church in Independence with Lee Soxman officiating. Jimmie had spent 1 ½ years fighting WWII in the Philippines.
Delma Fern and Jimmie had two daughters. As a family they enjoyed many vacations throughout the US, time in their motorhome, fishing trips with extended family, games and cards, and many church activities where they were very active.
She went to work in 1976 for the K.C. Royals in a seasonal job, retiring in 1990. In 1979 she took another seasonal job with Hallmark Cards, retiring in 1993. She and Jimmie bought their last motorhome and spent 7 winters in Mission TX making many friends at Oleander Acres. After selling their motorhome and house they moved into Apple Tree Condos, made new friends and welcomed several from the past into the condo community.
She was preceded in death by her parents John and Pearl Steinhauser, twin brother Raymond Vern, and sister Francis Irene. She is survived by her husband Jimmie, daughters Sylvia Harless, Gloria Harless Sanders and husband David, step-granddaughter Kristen and family; brother Wayne Steinhauser and wife Betty; her husband’s brother Melvin Harless and wife Carol and extended family.
