Robert Harrell

Robert “Bob” Lee Harrell, 82, of Lone Jack, MO, died on March 26, 2011 after a courageous battle with cancer. Born September 25th, 1928 in Danville, VA, he was the son of the late Robert Mack Harrell and Mary Dickens Harrell. He is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Doris Lyons Harrell; son Kevin (wife Beth); daughter Kym McLaughlin (husband Darryl); three grandchildren Brittney, Lauren and Nathan, all of the Kansas City area; and two sisters Sylvia “Pat” Farley and Nancy Van Pelt both of Danville, VA. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sister, Marie Privette. Robert attended Schoolfield High School in Danville, VA. He retired from the Air Force after 23 years of military service including service in the Vietnam and Korean wars. While in the service he was a radar instructor, completing additional computer radar training at MIT and he studied the Vietnamese language to continue his teaching in Vietnam. After military retirement he obtained a degree in Administration of Justice from Avila College and then worked at the Kansas City Department of Corrections and the IRS. Bob enjoyed spending time with his adoring grandchildren and ‘granddogs’, playing weekly pinochle with his special friends, fishing, going to the casino, listening to Bluegrass music and annual family trips to the beaches of Emerald Isle, NC. A visitation will take place from 6-8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 29, at the Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th St., Independence, MO. Services at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, at the Suburban Chapel, with a graveside Wednesday afternoon at the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery, Higginsville, MO. In lieu of flowers, please send contributions to St. Luke’s Hospice, 3100 Broadway, Suite 1000, KCMO 64111 in honor of their devoted care during his illness.
