Melvin Harrington, 81, of Independence, MO passed away April 7, 2009. A visitation will be held from 6-8:00 p.m. on Friday, April 10, 2009 at the Carson-Speaks Chapel, 1501 W. Lexington, Independence, MO. A Masonic service as well as a celebration of life will be held 10:00 a.m. on Saturday at the chapel. Burial to follow at Woodlawn Cemetery. Melvin was born May 3, 1927 in Lexington, MO to James and Mary (Wooden) Harrington. He was a Veteran of the United States Navy, serving during WWII. In 1989, Melvin retired from Holmes Freight Lines, where he worked as a truck driver. He was a member of the Teamsters Union, he was a 32nd Degree Mason at the East Gate Masonic Lodge, as well as a past president of the Ararat Shrine. His hobbies included his guitar, which he played all his life. Melvin was preceded in death by his loving wife of 52 years, Dorothy Harrington; and one son, Steven Kelly Harrington. He is survived by one daughter, Renee Harrington; four grandchildren, Adleigh Coy, Melany Neal and husband Jim, Kaylan Harrington and Stephanie Harrington; two great grandchildren, Joley Anna Neal and Kelly James Neal; four sisters, Lois Mayes, Jean Tiffany, Wanda LeMay, Louise Farris; and numerous nieces and nephews. Melvin will be dearly missed by his loving family, especially his wonderful grandchildren who called him Poppie.
