Dora “Dodie” E. Hartford, 92, Overland Park, KS, formerly of Independence, MO, passed away Oct. 8, 2013. Graveside services will be at 2 pm, Friday, Oct. 11 at Mound Grove Cemetery. A lunch at 12:30 pm, Sat., Oct. 12 will be followed by a Celebration of Dodie’s Life at 2 pm at Shawnee Drive Community of Christ, 4400 Shawnee Drive., Kansas City, KS 66106. In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions to D.E.B.R.A. or Special Olympics Kansas City, 9001 W. 67th St., Merriam, KS 66202. Dodie was born Dec. 27, 1927 in Rosalie NE. She earned her teaching degree from Wayne State Teacher’s College in NE and taught at the famous Boys Town at one time among many other schools. She spent 1986-89 teaching English as a second language in Japan. She worked with the Girl Scouts of America for over twenty years and was a volunteer for the American Diabetes Assoc. She was a member of the Shawnee Drive Congregation Community of Christ and served as an Elder. She loved bird-watching and solving jigsaw puzzles. Dodie was preceded in death by her husband Steve Hartford; siblings Walter Hughes, Vera Self, Reuben Hughes, Belva Baldwin, Bessie Giles and son-in-law Rick Horne. She is survived by daughter Sherry Moser and husband Bob, Council Bluffs, IA; son Mike Hartford and wife Jean, Overland Park, KS; daughter Sue Horne, Sloan, IA; six grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren and many other family members.
