Joyce Verna Haston, 77 of Independence, MO, passed away, Saturday, April 24, 2010 at her residence. Services will be 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, April 27, 2010 at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 6 to 8:00 p.m., Monday at the chapel. Donations may be made in her name to Crossroads Hospice. Joyce was born October 24, 1932 in Independence, MO to Verbil and Flora (Jones) Hartley. She has been a lifelong area resident having graduated from William Chrisman High School in 1950 and Kansas City College of Commerce. She was a devoted wife mother and homemaker who was an avid bridge player. She supported the war effort by working at Lake City Ammunition Plant during the Korean Conflict and also assisted her husband in his duties as vice president of the International Grain Millers Union. She was a member of the Community of Christ Stone Church. She was married to Gary D. Haston in 1952; he preceded her in death in 1986. Survivors include; her companion of 22 years, Richard Lewis; 2 daughters, Tamara Shumate and Danny Brooks of Grain Valley, MO and Brenda Smith of Bates City, MO; a sister, Marion Davis of Tulsa, OK and 5 grandchildren, Barrett Smith, Dustin Smith, Brittany Shumate, Danny Brooks, JR and Kindra Snelling.
