Raymond S. Hawks, Sr., 92 of Independence, MO passed away, Tuesday, August 18, 2015 at Centerpoint Medical Center.
Raymond was born April 3, 1923 in Morgan County, MO to James S. and Katie Ann (Sims) Hawks. He was married to Mary Lou (Gerhart) Hawks, his childhood sweetheart on May 31, 1944. Raymond was employed by General Motors Fairfax Plant for 17 years and sold Chevrolet cars and trucks for 24 years for Gene Cable and Molle Chevrolet. He retired from Molle in 1988. Raymond was a fighter pilot in Europe during WWII, flying combat in P-38’s and P-47 fighters. He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church since 1946. He was also a member of the Ararat Shrine, York Rite Bodies, the Masonic Lodge where he served as past Hi Priest of Royar Arch Independence #12. He was a life member of the 367th Fighter Group, the P-38 Association, the P-47 Thunderbolt Pilots Association, life member of the American Legion #21 and the DAV.
Raymond is survived by: a son, Raymond “Sid” Hawks, Jr. and his wife Michele of Florence, MO; 2 grandchildren, Erin M. Hawks of Moore, OK and Heather M. Hawks of Kansas City, MO. He was preceded in death by his parents and 3 sisters, Mary Lee Hawks Smith, Florence Sue Hawks Hunter and an infant sister.
Services will be 11:00 a.m., Monday, August 24, 2015 at the Christ United Methodist Church 14506 East 39th St S, Independence, MO 64055. The family will greet friends from 10:00 a.m., until service time Monday at the church. Burial with full military honors will be at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2015 at the Glensted Cemetery near Versailles, MO.
